Hearing Evaluations

Hearing tests are an important diagnostic tool that is used by hearing healthcare specialists to identify hearing loss. Over 48 million people have some degree of hearing loss, a medical condition that reduces one’s capacity to hear and process speech as well as sound. Hearing tests allow people to find out if they have hearing loss as well as learn the full picture of their hearing health. The hearing evaluation process is painless and noninvasive from start to finish. Knowing what you can expect from the process can alleviate any anxiety you may feel about it as well as help you be prepared!

Consultation

The hearing evaluation process will start with a consultation process that is similar to most medical appointments. This includes completing any necessary paperwork as well as having a conversation about your hearing health. You will be asked about your hearing health history, family history of hearing health related issues, the symptoms you are experiencing, and lifestyle factors. This includes what you do for work, what your social life looks like, and other activities you regularly engage in. Exploring this information can help reveal any factors that may be contributing to the symptoms you are experiencing. An explanation of test results so you understand your hearing loss better.

Ear Exam

The next portion of your appointment is an inspection of your ears. We will use a video otoscope to closely examine your ear canal and eardrum. This allows us to check for any factors that may impact hearing health. This includes accumulated ear wax, ear infections, a perforated eardrum, and bone growths which can impair the hearing process. This can cause what is known as conductive hearing loss, a type of temporary hearing loss that is solvable with minor interventions.

Results

You will receive your results after the testing is completed. Results will be presented to you on an audiogram, a visual chart that shows your hearing capacities in both ears. We will take the time to thoroughly discuss the specifics of your hearing loss- type, degree of impairment, what the needs are in each ear etc. We will also discuss the best course of treatment, recommending options that can optimally meet your hearing needs. The most common treatment for hearing loss is Prescription Fitted hearing aids. If this is the hearing solution that would be most effective for you, we will recommend specific Prescription Fitted devices that are ideal for your hearing loss.
